Scaling & Root Planing

Timberlake & Shaw Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Seattle WA

Gingivitis is a reversible inflammation of the gingival (gum) tissues. If left untreated, it can turn into an irreversible disease that has many unfortunate side effects (see Periodontal (gum) Disease). Treatment of gingivitis is simple...get your teeth professionally clenained b your favorite dental hygienist every 6 months and brush and floss your teeth at home! If your gingivitis does happen to progress to periodontal disease, there is still a simple treatment that is used to stabilize the disease process and get your mouth back to a health state. This periodontal treatment is often referred to as Scaling and Root Planing.

Scaling and root planing as a periodontal disease treatment is more involved than your typical 6 month cleaning. When someone with healthy teeth and gums or even gingivitis has a dental cleaning, it is considered a "preventive" procedure. Scaling and root planing, on the other hand, is needed as a form of treating an existing disease process. It involves removing hard calculus and diseased tissues from your underneath your gum tissue and along the roots of your teeth. To keep you comfortable we often recommend local anesthetic for this type of procedure.
